Called by Grace and Preserved by Mercy
Rev. Enoch Thompson | Thursday, October 1, 2026 | Romans 9:24–29

KEY VERSE: “As he says in Hosea: ‘I will call them “my people” who are not my people; and I will call her “my loved one” who is not my loved one,’ … ‘they will be called “sons of the living God.”’” — Romans 9:25–26 NIV
MESSAGE:
Romans 9:24–29 reveals the astonishing extent of God’s saving grace. Paul explains that God’s call extends beyond Israel to include people from every nation and background. Through the prophets Hosea and Isaiah, God had already declared His intention to form a people for Himself from those who were once considered outside His covenant blessings.
The Gentiles, who were not God’s covenant people, would be called His people. Those who had not received mercy would receive mercy. This demonstrates that salvation is entirely the work of God’s grace. We are welcomed into His family because God graciously calls us to Himself.
Paul also reminds his readers that a remnant from Israel would be saved. This reveals God’s faithfulness to His saving purpose. Though many in Israel rejected Him, God preserved a people who trusted in His promises. His mercy ensured that His redemptive purpose continued.
This passage gives us hope and calls us to humility. God’s saving grace transcends human distinctions and gathers those whom He calls to Himself. We receive salvation as a gift of divine mercy, and that truth leaves no room for personal pride.
Today, believers can rejoice that they have been called by grace and preserved within God’s saving purpose. His call flows from His love and sovereign purpose. The God who graciously calls a people for Himself remains faithful to His saving purpose.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
Thank God for calling you into His family through His grace and mercy. Celebrate the diversity of God’s people and welcome others with Christlike love. Share the Gospel with someone who may feel unworthy of God’s grace. Live each day with humility, recognising that your salvation is a gift from God.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your amazing grace that has called me into Your family and extends to people of every nation and background. Help me to live with humility, gratitude, and obedience, welcoming others and sharing the hope of the Gospel. Strengthen my faith, and may my life reflect Your mercy and bring You glory. For His dear Name’s sake, Amen.

Day 274 Ezekiel 43–46 — God’s Glory Returns and Worship Is Restored
DAILY word study: CALLED In Romans 9:24, “called” comes from the Greek verb καλέω, kaleō. Paul uses the form ἐκάλεσεν, ekalesen, meaning “He called.” The word can mean to call, summon, invite, or give a name.
There is a rich connection within the passage. Paul says that God “called” people from both Jews and Gentiles, and then quotes Hosea: “I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people.”
The same word family connects God’s summons with identity. God calls people to Himself and gives them a place among His people. His call carries a sense of belonging, relationship, and purpose. This gives deeper meaning to grace. You belong to God because He graciously called you into relationship with Himself and made you part of His people.
Reflect on This:
How should knowing that God has called you to belong to Him shape how you live and how you welcome others?
