Chosen by Grace: God's Purpose Stands

MESSAGE:
Paul addresses a difficult but important question in this passage: If many Israelites rejected Christ, has God’s promise failed? His answer is clear: “It is not as though God’s word had failed” (Romans 9:6). God’s covenant purposes remain secure, even when human response appears to suggest otherwise.
Paul reminds us that belonging to God’s covenant family has never depended merely on physical ancestry, privilege, or human effort. He points to Isaac and Jacob as examples of how God advanced His redemptive purpose according to His gracious choice. Before Jacob and Esau were born, and before they had done anything good or bad, God declared that His purpose would stand. Salvation and God’s redemptive plan are rooted in His grace and sovereign calling.
Paul’s reference to Jacob and Esau emphasises that God remains free and faithful in carrying forward His covenant purpose. His choice was made before their personal achievements could become grounds for boasting. The emphasis rests on God’s calling and the certainty of His purpose.
This truth should lead us to humility and confidence. We cannot boast in our achievements, background, or righteousness because salvation is entirely a gift of God’s grace. Our relationship with Him rests on His faithful purpose and promise. When we truly appreciate His grace, gratitude and obedience should increasingly shape the way we live.
The God who chose Isaac and Jacob is the same God who calls people to Himself today. His plans remain secure, His promises remain dependable, and His grace reaches far beyond anything we could earn. This passage invites us to trust His faithfulness and rest our confidence in the God whose purposes stand forever. FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
Rest in God’s grace. Remember that your standing with God is grounded in His mercy and faithfulness. Trust God’s purposes when you do not understand them. His wisdom reaches beyond your understanding, and His character remains trustworthy. Walk in humility. Salvation is a gift of grace. Let gratitude shape your relationship with God and with others.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank You that Your Word never fails and Your purposes always stand. Help me to rest in Your grace, trust Your wisdom, and remain humble and grateful. Strengthen me to live in obedience and bring You glory as I depend on Your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

DAILY word study: PURPOSE The Greek word translated “purpose” is πρόθεσις, prothesis. It refers to a deliberate intention, plan, or resolve established beforehand.
In Romans 9:11, Paul connects God’s purpose with His calling. The emphasis is that God’s redemptive plan proceeds from His own gracious intention. It is not improvised in response to human achievement.
Paul then says that this purpose “might stand.” The verb μένω, menō, carries the idea of remaining, continuing, or enduring. God’s purpose is therefore presented as something that remains firm because its foundation is God Himself. This gives us a deeper reason for confidence. God’s purposes are sustained by His character and faithfulness.
