Completely Helpless

KEY VERSE: “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.” — Romans 7:18 ESV
MESSAGE:
The struggle described in Romans 7 is not only about knowing what is right; it also exposes our inability to do what is right by our own strength. In today’s Key Verse, Paul brings three matters clearly before us: the corruption of the flesh, the desire to live according to God’s will, and our complete inability to carry out that desire without divine help.
Paul says, “I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.” This is the painful reality of the divided self we considered yesterday. The desire for what is right is present, yet the power to fulfil that desire is lacking. It is instructive to note that sincere intentions alone cannot overcome the force of sin working within us. Human resolve reaches its limit when confronted by indwelling sin.
Verse 20 brings the matter into sharper focus. Paul identifies sin dwelling within him as the source of this inability. We therefore cannot rescue ourselves from the power of sin, no matter how determined we may be. Our helplessness should lead us to seek the One who can help us. Only Jesus Christ can provide the grace and power we need to live in obedience to God.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
Stop relying on determination alone in the areas where you repeatedly struggle. Bring your helplessness honestly to Christ and depend on Him for strength to obey God.
PRAYER:
Father God, I confess that I cannot overcome sin by my own strength. Help me depend fully on Jesus Christ for the grace and power I need to live in obedience to You. Amen.

DAILY word study: DWELLS What does Paul mean when he says that nothing good “dwells” in his flesh?
The word “dwells” in Romans 7:18 comes from the Greek oikeō, meaning “to live in,” “inhabit,” or “make one’s home in.”
Paul describes sin as something deeply present within fallen human nature. His problem is not a lack of desire, because he wants to do what is right. The struggle lies in the power of indwelling sin and his inability to carry out that desire by his own strength.

Your weakness should lead you to Christ. Depend on Him for strength to obey God.
