Faithful stewardship - the best way to prepare for Jesus' return
Rev. Charles Oppong-Poku | August 25, 2023 | Matthew 24:45-51
KEY VERSE:
“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. Matthew 24:45-46
MESSAGE:
In this teaching as part of the Olivet Discourse, Jesus presents a powerful perspective on how to best prepare for His return: through faithful stewardship. This teaching about the faithful and wise servant speaks to the heart of our relationship with God, our responsibilities, and how we should live as we await His second coming. Jesus depicts a servant entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the master's household and ensuring the provision of food for the other servants. The servant is described as "faithful and wise," signifying qualities that reflect not only competence but also a deep commitment to the master's will. This steward understands the value of his role and diligently carries out his duties. Faithful stewardship goes beyond the simple management of resources; it's about understanding that all we have ultimately belongs to God. It involves recognizing that our time, talents, relationships, and possessions are gifts from Him. The faithful steward acknowledges this ownership and, out of love and gratitude, manages these resources in a way that aligns with God's purposes and principles.
The passage’s profound message is that the best way to prepare for Christ's return is by being a faithful steward. This means consistently living in a manner that honours God, serving Him wholeheartedly, and serving others with love and compassion. As we engage in faithful stewardship, we are readying ourselves for Christ's return. Faithful stewardship helps us adopt an eternal perspective. When our focus is on God's purposes and the growth of His kingdom, we are less likely to be entangled in worldly distractions that could hinder our preparedness. Jesus assures us that the faithful and wise servant will be rewarded with increased responsibilities and a share in the master's joy. Similarly, as faithful stewards, we can anticipate spiritual growth, a deepened sense of purpose, and the joy of aligning our lives with God's plan.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
Reflect on how you perceive the resources you have been entrusted with, such as your time, gifts and talents, relationships, and possessions. Are you recognizing them as gifts from God? How can this perspective shape your approach to managing and using these resources? Consider the ways you are currently serving God and others. Are your actions and choices aligned with God's purposes and principles? Reflect on your level of preparedness for Christ's return. Are you actively watchful, engaged in obedient service, and open to the leading of the Holy Spirit? How can you cultivate a lifestyle of active readiness through faithful stewardship, ensuring that you are found faithful when Jesus returns?
PRAYER:
Father God, I desire to be a faithful steward of the resources, time, and talents You have entrusted to me. As I anticipate the return of Your Son, Jesus Christ, I ask for Your help in preparing my heart and life for that blessed day. Grant me the wisdom to recognize that all I have comes from Your hand. Help me to view these gifts as opportunities to serve Your kingdom and bring glory to Your name. May I use them with a grateful heart, remembering that my ultimate purpose is to honour You in all that I do. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen! THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.
SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!! ______________________________ DAILY word study: WISE The word "wise" in this verse is translated from the Greek word "φρόνιμος" (phronimos). This Greek adjective refers to being prudent, sensible, wise, or intelligent. It describes someone who exercises sound judgment and practical wisdom in their actions and decisions.
The term "wise" carries a significant lesson about stewardship and leadership. It's more than just knowledge; it involves the ability to apply knowledge effectively in real-life situations. A "wise" servant, in this context, is one who can discern the needs of those under their care, make informed decisions, and act in the best interest of all. This parable calls us to consider how we manage the responsibilities and resources entrusted to us. Wisdom involves making choices that align with God's principles and seeking the well-being of others. Being "wise" in our service means using our skills, time, and resources with discernment and prudence, seeking to bless and benefit those around us.
Reflections
How can you grow in practical wisdom in your role as a steward of the resources and responsibilities God has given you? How does the concept of being both "faithful" and "wise" impact the way you approach your service to others and your relationship with God?
