Grace is Never a License to Sin

KEY VERSE: “Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin…”_ —Romans 6:1–2 NIV
MESSAGE:
Romans 5 ends with the encouraging truth that “where sin increased, grace increased all the more” (Romans 5:20). This truth raises an important question: If God’s grace is greater than our sin, can believers continue living in sin? Paul responds decisively: “By no means!” God’s grace transforms those whom Christ has redeemed and leads them into a new way of life.
The cross reveals the seriousness of sin and the immeasurable love of God. Jesus Christ gave His life to save us from sin and bring us into fellowship with God. Treating grace as permission to continue in sin shows a misunderstanding of Christ’s sacrifice. Grace magnifies God’s holiness and gives believers strength to pursue the life He desires for them.
Paul reminds believers that they have “died to sin.” Through faith in Jesus Christ, our relationship with sin has fundamentally changed. Sin no longer holds dominion over us. We still face temptation, and the Holy Spirit gives us power to resist it. We belong to Christ, and our identity now rests in our union with Him. This new identity should shape our desires, choices, and conduct.
Paul therefore asks, “How can we live in it any longer?” Genuine grace produces transformation in our attitudes, words, relationships, and daily decisions. A believer who understands God’s grace desires to please the One who has saved them. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ. Holiness becomes the grateful response of a heart transformed by His grace.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
In what area of your life have you become comfortable with sin or taken God’s grace for granted? Confess it sincerely and receive His forgiveness. Identify one practical step that will help you turn away from that sinful pattern. Depend on the Holy Spirit and choose obedience today. The grace that forgives you also empowers you to live a life that honours Christ.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the immeasurable grace You have shown me through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Forgive me for the times I have taken Your grace lightly or failed to pursue holiness. Give me strength through the Holy Spirit to turn away from sin and walk in obedience. May my life reflect the transforming power of Your grace and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

DAILY word study: GRACE The word “grace” is translated from the Greek word charis, which means favour, kindness, or a freely given gift.
In Romans 6:1, Paul refers to the grace he explained in the previous chapter. God gives grace freely through Jesus Christ. This grace forgives sin, restores our relationship with God, and gives us strength to live under His rule. Grace reaches us in our guilt and begins a new work within us.
