Guidance for Small Group Leaders
Rev. Tetteh-Annor Larbi | May 26, 2024 | John 10:1-6
KEY VERSE:
And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. John 10:4 (NKJV)
MESSAGE:
Jesus illustrates the qualities of a good shepherd, offering profound guidance for small group leaders. As Jesus describes the shepherd who enters by the gate, He emphasises the importance of genuine, rightful leadership. Small group leaders are called to mirror this authenticity, approaching their role with integrity and a deep commitment to the well-being of their group members. By entering through the gate—representing Jesus’ way of love, truth, and righteousness—leaders ensure they are following God's will and setting a positive example.
Jesus highlights the intimate relationship between the shepherd and the sheep, where the sheep recognise and follow the shepherd's voice. This underscores the significance of building trust and familiarity within the small group. Leaders should invest time in knowing each member personally and understanding their struggles, joys, and spiritual needs. By doing so, leaders can offer more tailored guidance and support, creating a nurturing environment where members feel valued and heard. The sheep follow the shepherd because they know and trust him, mirroring how group members are more likely to engage and grow when they feel genuinely cared for.
Moreover, Jesus contrasts the shepherd with thieves and robbers who seek to harm the sheep. For small group leaders, this is a call to be vigilant against false teachings and harmful influences. Leaders must safeguard their group by grounding their teachings in biblical truth and fostering an atmosphere of spiritual discernment. By being a consistent and reliable source of godly wisdom, leaders help their members navigate challenges and avoid the pitfalls of misleading doctrines. Ultimately, a good small group leader, like the true shepherd, leads with compassion, authenticity, and a steadfast commitment to guiding their flock towards spiritual growth and safety.

Show genuine concern for the growth of your group members.
PRAYER:
Dear Lord, help me to take any responsibility you bring my way in leadership seriously. May I not be slothful in leading. Grant me grace to genuinely love and care for the people I lead, and guide me as I guide them to grow in intimacy with you. For your dear name’s sake. Amen.
THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.
SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!
Daily word study: HIS VOICE The Greek word for "voice" is "φωνή" (phonē). It can refer to a sound or tone but is often used to denote a significant, recognizable communication, such as a call or speech. Jesus as the shepherd and His voice as the guiding principle highlight the necessity for believers to develop a deep familiarity with His teachings. Recognizing His voice implies understanding His will and aligning one's life accordingly. It also indicates a personal and relational dynamic where Jesus knows His followers individually, and they, in turn, trust and follow Him.
Reflections:
How well do you recognize the voice of Jesus in your life? Are you attuned to His guidance and instruction? Reflect on the ways you can deepen your relationship with Him to ensure that you are following His voice rather than the myriad other influences around you. How can you cultivate a more attentive and obedient heart to respond faithfully to His call?
