Heirs - Suffering to Reign with Jesus

 Rev. Charles Oppong-Poku | Friday, September 11, 2026 | Romans 8:12–17

KEY VERSE: “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”  — Romans 8:16–17

MESSAGE:

Paul takes the truth of adoption a step further. Those whom God has adopted as His children are also His heirs. The Holy Spirit assures us that we belong to God, and our identity as His children gives us the privilege of sharing in an eternal inheritance with Christ. God has graciously welcomed us into His family and given us a future anchored in His promises. Our greatest hope rests in what He has prepared for us through Christ, including the joy of sharing in His glory.

Paul also reminds us that the path to glory involves suffering with Christ. Following Jesus can bring hardship, rejection and sacrifice as we remain faithful to Him. Honesty may cost us an advantage, and obedience may expose us to criticism or exclusion. Such experiences belong to the costly path of discipleship. Our inheritance is God’s gracious gift through Christ; suffering earns us no place in His family. As those who already belong to Him, we depend on His Spirit to help us endure the difficulties that accompany faithfulness.

The promise of being glorified with Christ gives us courage for the present. When obedience becomes costly, we can remember that our Father knows us, His Spirit remains with us and our future is secure in Christ. We can bring our pain honestly before God and trust Him for strength to continue. His promised glory gives us reason to persevere through hardship without surrendering our commitment to Jesus. As children and fellow heirs with Christ, we walk forward in the assurance that we will share in His glory.

FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:

Be truthful today, even when dishonesty could protect your reputation or give you an advantage. Ask the Holy Spirit for courage to accept the cost of obedience, remembering that you belong to God and share in Christ’s promised inheritance.

PRAYER:

Father, thank You for making me Your child and an heir with Christ. Strengthen me by Your Spirit to remain faithful when following Jesus brings hardship. Help me obey You with courage and keep my hope anchored in the glory You have promised. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.

SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!

The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING

Day 254 Jeremiah 25–28 — God’s Word Stands above False Assurance

DAILY word study: FELLOW HEIRS In Romans 8:17, “fellow heirs” is translated from the Greek word synklēronomos, meaning a coheir—someone who shares an inheritance with another. Paul uses it to describe the place believers receive as children of God alongside Christ.

The phrase connects our future directly to Jesus. Through Him, we belong to God’s family and will share in His glory. This inheritance comes through God’s grace and reflects the relationship He has established with us.

Paul also connects being fellow heirs with suffering alongside Christ. Our union with Jesus shapes both our present discipleship and our future hope. As we follow Him through costly obedience, we can trust the promise that we will also be glorified with Him.

Reflect on this:

Being a fellow heir with Christ gives you a lasting perspective on what obedience may cost today. An opportunity lost through honesty or rejection experienced because of faithfulness cannot cancel your promised inheritance. Let your place in God’s family strengthen your courage to follow Jesus.
