I Am He

Rev. Tetteh-Annor Larbi | March 11, 2024 | John 4:25-26

KEY VERSE:

"The woman said, 'I know that Messiah' (called Christ) 'is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.' Then Jesus declared, 'I, the one speaking to you—I am he. John 4:25-26 (NIV)

MESSAGE:

In the exchange between Jesus and the Samaritan Woman, she discerned Jesus as a prophet and indicated her awareness of the Messiah's arrival, anticipating the clarity and understanding He would bring. In response, Jesus boldly declares, "I, the one speaking to you—I am he." These simple yet powerful words encapsulate the essence of Jesus's identity as the long-awaited Messiah, the fulfilment of God's promises, and the embodiment of divine truth and salvation.

"I Am He" echoes throughout Scripture as a declaration of God's sovereign presence and power. In the Old Testament, God reveals Himself to Moses as "I Am Who I Am" (Exodus 3:14), affirming His eternal existence and authority. Jesus's proclamation of "I am he" not only asserts His identity as the promised Messiah but also aligns Himself with the divine, proclaiming His unity with the Father. In this declaration, Jesus invites the Samaritan woman—and all who hear His words—to recognise Him as the source of ultimate truth and salvation.

Our reflections on Jesus's declaration, "I am he," remind us of His unparalleled significance in our lives. Jesus is not merely a historical figure or a moral teacher; He is the Son of God, the Savior of humanity, and the ultimate revelation of God's love and grace. His declaration challenges us to acknowledge His lordship and authority in our lives, to surrender our doubts and uncertainties, and to trust in Him as the one who brings clarity and understanding to our deepest questions and longings.

FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:

Desire and purpose to have a deeper relationship with Jesus, the Messiah. When we encounter the living Christ in our lives, let us respond with faith and humility. Let us embrace His identity as the source of truth and salvation, and may His declaration resonate in our hearts as we journey with Him, confident in His power to guide, sustain, and transform us.

PRAYER:

Lord Jesus, I long for an encounter with you. May your Identity as “I am” transform my life and how I live it for your glory. For your dear name’s sake. Amen.

THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.

SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!

DAILY word study: I AM HE In John 4:25-26, the Greek phrase "Ἐγώ εἰμι" (Egō eimi) is used by Jesus when He says, "ἐγώ εἰμι, ὁ λαλῶν σοι" (Egō eimi, ho lalōn soi), which translates to "I am, the one speaking to you." Ἐγώ (Egō): This is the first-person singular pronoun "I" in Greek. It emphasizes the subject of the sentence, highlighting Jesus' self-identification. εἰμι (eimi): This is the first-person singular present indicative form of the verb "to be" in Greek. It carries the meaning of "I am." In this context, it emphasizes Jesus' existence and identity.

By the use of these words, Jesus emphatically declares His identity as "I am," the divine name revealed to Moses in Exodus 3:14, where God declares Himself as "I AM WHO I AM." By using this phrase, Jesus asserts His divine nature and eternal existence.

Reflections

How does understanding Jesus' self-identification as "I am" deepen your perception of His divinity and authority? How does this revelation impact your relationship with Him and your understanding of His role in your life?
