Loved at Our Worst

Rev. Tetteh-Annor Larbi | Sunday, July 19, 2026 | Romans 5:7–8
KEY VERSE: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8, NKJV)
MESSAGE:
There are moments when the memory of past failures makes us question whether God could still love us. Romans 5:8 gives a clear answer. God demonstrated His love through the death of Christ while we were still sinners. He acted when we were guilty, separated from Him, and unable to present any moral claim to His favour.
Paul first reminds us that people rarely surrender their lives even for someone considered good. God’s love reaches far beyond the highest examples of human sacrifice. Christ died for sinners. The cross stands as the decisive proof that God took the initiative to save us. Through repentance and faith in Christ, we receive forgiveness, reconciliation, and new life.
This truth gives assurance to every believer carrying guilt and shame. The Holy Spirit convicts us so that we can confess sin, turn from it, and grow in holiness. Condemnation drives us away from God and tells us that Christ’s sacrifice is insufficient. The gospel calls us to come near, receive forgiveness, and live with gratitude. The love that reached us in sin also teaches us to show mercy to people whose failures are difficult for us to overlook.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
Bring every known sin honestly before God today. Confess it, turn from it, and receive the forgiveness Christ secured for you. Reject shame that keeps you away from God. Thank Him for the cross, and choose one person whose failure has been difficult for you to overlook. Ask God to help you respond with truth, wisdom, and mercy.
PRAYER:
Father, thank You for demonstrating Your love through the death of Christ while I was still a sinner. I confess my sins and receive the forgiveness You provide through Jesus. Free me from shame that draws me away from You. Help me respond to Your conviction with repentance and faith. Fill my heart with gratitude for the cross, and teach me to show truth, mercy, and compassion to others. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

DAILY word study: DEMONSTRATES The word translated “demonstrates” comes from the Greek word synistēmi. It means to show, establish, prove, or present something clearly before others.
God did not leave His love as an idea for us to guess. He established its truth through a historical public act: the death of Christ.
This gives believers a clear measure for understanding love. Genuine love becomes visible through action, sacrifice, and commitment. The cross continues to stand before us as God’s proof that His love is real and trustworthy.
