Righteousness Through Faith Alone

Rev. Enoch Thompson | Friday, October 2, 2026 | Romans 9:30–33

KEY VERSE:

“What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith … Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the ‘stumbling stone.’” — Romans 9:30–32 NIV

MESSAGE:

Human religion often seeks to gain acceptance with God through offerings, sacrifices, good works, and personal effort. The Gospel reveals that God provides the righteousness we need through Jesus Christ and receives those who place their faith in Him.

In Romans 9:30–33, Paul explains that the Gentiles obtained righteousness by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Israel zealously pursued righteousness but failed to attain it because they sought it through works rather than through faith.

At the heart of this passage is the truth that a right relationship with God cannot be earned through human effort. No amount of religious activity, moral achievement, or personal discipline can make a sinner righteous before a holy God. Righteousness is a gift that God freely gives to those who place their trust in Jesus Christ. Those who receive this righteousness through faith are then called to live in grateful obedience to God.

Paul describes Christ as the stone over which many stumbled. The very One God provided for salvation became an obstacle to those who refused to trust Him. They depended on their own performance and failed to receive God’s provision through faith. Those who believe in Christ will never be put to shame.

God’s invitation remains open. Salvation is given to those who humbly acknowledge their need and place their trust in Jesus Christ. Faith receives the righteousness God provides, and Christ remains the sure foundation of our salvation. As Romans 9 closes, Paul brings us back to the heart of the Gospel. God’s sovereign mercy, gracious call, and saving purpose lead us to Jesus Christ, in whom righteousness is received through faith.

FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:

Place your confidence in Christ and thank God for the gift of righteousness that comes through faith. Examine your heart and surrender every tendency to depend on your achievements for acceptance before God. Let grateful obedience flow from the salvation you have received. Share the message of salvation through faith in Christ with someone who needs to hear the Gospel.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the righteousness and salvation You give by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Guard me from pride and self-reliance, and help me to trust fully in Christ and live in grateful obedience. Give me courage to share the Gospel, keep me firm in faith, and let my life point to Jesus, the sure foundation of my hope. For His dear Name’s sake, Amen.

THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING. SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!

The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING

Day 275 Ezekiel 47–48; Daniel 1–2 — Restoration Completed and Faithfulness in Exile

DAILY word study: PURSUED What does Paul mean when he says Israel “pursued” righteousness?

The word “pursued” in Romans 9:31 comes from the Greek διώκω, diōkō. It means to chase after, press toward, or seek something with determination.

Paul’s choice of this word shows that Israel’s problem was not a lack of seriousness. They pursued righteousness earnestly. Their pursuit rested on works and personal effort. Paul points us to faith in Christ as the way righteousness is received.

This gives us an important insight: zeal needs the right foundation. A sincere spiritual pursuit can still miss its goal when confidence rests on self-reliance.

Faith places confidence in Christ and receives the righteousness God gives.

Reflect on This: Where might your desire to please God be turning into an effort to prove yourself to Him?
