Salvation, the Greatest Need

KEY VERSE: “For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race, the people of Israel.” — Romans 9:3–4 NIV
MESSAGE:
We are naturally concerned about the material, social, and economic welfare of people, and rightly so. As Christians, we should contribute to improving the conditions of our communities and helping those in need. Social and economic well-being remain important, yet the greatest need of every person is to know God through faith in Jesus Christ and to receive the gift of eternal life.
The Apostle Paul understood this truth deeply. He was fully aware of Israel's unique place in God's redemptive plan and the privileges they had enjoyed throughout their history. Speaking of the Israelites, he writes: “Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised!” (Romans 9:4-5)
Israel had been greatly blessed by God. They had received divine revelation, covenant promises, and a rich spiritual heritage. Yet many failed to recognise and receive Jesus Christ as the promised Messiah. Despite their religious advantages, they missed the salvation found in Christ. This reality broke Paul’s heart and prompted his passionate cry on their behalf.
Paul understood that no amount of religious privilege, family heritage, social standing, or earthly blessing can substitute for a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Eternal life is found in knowing God personally. As Jesus declared, “Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.” John 17:3.The burden that filled Paul’s heart should fill ours as well. Many people around us may appear successful, respected, comfortable, and prosperous by human standards, yet remain strangers to the saving grace of God. Their deepest need is salvation through Jesus Christ.
Let us therefore pray, witness, and labour for the salvation of souls. Eternal life in Christ is the greatest blessing anyone can receive. In Him there is forgiveness, freedom, purpose, and everlasting life. FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
Identify at least three people in your family, workplace, school, or community who need Christ, and commit to praying for them daily. Pray for the ability to look beyond people’s outward success and see their spiritual condition. Intentionally share the love and message of Christ with someone this week. Support the work of evangelism and missions through prayer, giving, and personal involvement. Ask God to give you a burden for souls similar to the burden Paul had for Israel.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of salvation through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Forgive me for the times I have focused more on temporary needs than on people's eternal destiny. Give me a heart that longs for the salvation of the lost. Fill me with compassion, boldness, and wisdom to share the Gospel with others. Help me to pray faithfully and labour diligently so that many may come to know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. For His dear Name’s sake, Amen.

DAILY word study: SALVATION The word “salvation” comes from the Greek σωτηρία, sōtēria. It speaks of rescue, deliverance, preservation, and being brought into safety.
In the New Testament, sōtēria points especially to God’s saving work through Jesus Christ. Salvation is more than relief from difficulty. It includes forgiveness of sin, reconciliation with God, new life in Christ, and the hope of eternal life.
This helps us understand Paul’s burden in Romans 9. He was deeply concerned because his people had many spiritual privileges, yet many had not received the salvation found in Christ.
