Shepherds, Not Thieves

Rev. Tetteh-Annor Larbi | May 24, 2024 | John 10:1-6

But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. John 10:2 (NKJV)

John chapter 10 begins with Jesus speaking of Himself as the true shepherd who enters by the gate, and contrasting Himself with thieves and robbers who seek to harm the sheep. This metaphor emphasises the relationship between the shepherd and his sheep. The true shepherd knows his sheep intimately, calling them by name and leading them out to pasture. The sheep, in turn, recognise the shepherd's voice and follow him. This relationship reflects the deep care and guidance Jesus offers to His followers, highlighting the trust and security in His leadership.

The thieves and robbers represent false leaders and deceptive influences that seek to mislead and exploit the flock. Unlike the shepherd, they do not have the sheep's best interests at heart. Their intentions are selfish, driven by the desire to steal, kill, and destroy. Jesus warns against these false influences, urging His followers to discern and follow His voice alone. The passage reminds us to seek and adhere to true, godly guidance in our lives, avoiding those who would lead us astray.

We are encouraged to draw closer to the Good Shepherd and walk more intimately with Him. It is by so doing that, the Good Shepherd knows what our needs are and will provide them, sometimes without we even asking Him.

Deepen your relationship with Jesus, the Good Shepherd. By spending time in prayer and scripture. Learn to recognise His voice more clearly amidst the noise of the world. Trusting in His guidance.  Find peace and assurance, knowing that He leads you to abundant life. Commit to following the Shepherd who loves us, protects us, and calls us by name, rejecting the thieves who seek to harm us.

Heavenly Father, you are my Shepherd. Help me to know your voice and follow diligently as a sheep in your fold. Guide me into the path you have prepared for me. For your dear name’s sake. Amen.

DAILY word study: SHEPHERD The Greek word for "shepherd" is "ποιμήν" (poimēn). This term refers to someone who tends and cares for sheep, but in a broader sense, it denotes a leader who guides, protects, and nurtures those under their care. The true shepherd knows his sheep and they recognize his voice. This emphasizes the legitimacy and the intimate relationship between the shepherd and the sheep, pointing to Jesus’ role as the legitimate and caring leader of His people. The metaphor of the shepherd emphasizes Jesus' rightful and loving leadership. It highlights His role as the protector and guide of His followers, distinguishing Him from false leaders. This shepherd imagery also points to the sacrificial nature of Jesus’ mission, as He lays down His life for the sheep, demonstrating the ultimate act of care and commitment. Reflections: Reflect on Jesus as your shepherd. How do you experience His guidance and protection in your daily life? Are you listening for His voice amidst the many distractions and false messages around you? What steps can you take to strengthen your relationship with Jesus, the true shepherd, and to follow Him more closely in every aspect of your life?
