Speak the Truth in Christ

MESSAGE:
Truthfulness is essential to Christian living. Our words shape relationships, influence decisions, and reveal what is taking place within us. God calls His children to speak honestly and live with integrity.
Paul begins Romans 9 with a solemn declaration: “I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying.” He is preparing to share the deep sorrow he carries for his fellow Israelites. Because what he is about to say is personal and weighty, Paul makes clear that his words are sincere. His declaration introduces the heartfelt concern that unfolds through the verses that follow.
Paul first says that he speaks “in Christ.” His relationship with Christ shapes his words. Jesus is “Faithful and True” (Revelation 19:11), and those who follow Him should increasingly reflect His truthfulness in their speech and conduct. Our commitment to Christ should make us people whose words can be trusted.
Paul also appeals to his conscience. A conscience shaped by God’s Word helps us recognise when our words and motives are wrong. We should never distort facts to gain favour, protect ourselves, avoid criticism, or please people. God calls us to speak truthfully, with love and wisdom.
Paul then points to the witness of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. As we submit our words and motives to Him, He helps us reject deceit, exaggeration, hypocrisy, and manipulation. He forms within us the desire to honour God through what we say.
Truthfulness reaches beyond avoiding lies. It calls for sincerity in our motives, accuracy in our words, and integrity in our actions. When Christ shapes our lives, our words should give others good reason to trust us.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
Examine your words today. Is there an area where you have exaggerated, concealed the truth, distorted facts, or spoken dishonestly? Ask God to help you correct it. Let your relationship with Christ, a conscience shaped by His Word, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit lead you to speak the truth with love.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, You are the God of truth. Forgive me for every word that has failed to honour You. Shape my conscience through Your Word and guide my speech by Your Holy Spirit. Help me to speak truthfully, graciously, and with love. May my words and conduct faithfully reflect Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

DAILY word study: CONSCIENCE The word “conscience” is translated from the Greek syneidēsis, meaning an inner awareness that bears witness to what is right or wrong.
In Romans 9:1, Paul says his conscience bears witness “in the Holy Spirit.” His inner conviction supports the truthfulness of what he is saying before God.
A conscience shaped by God’s Word and sensitive to the Holy Spirit helps you recognise when your words are moving away from the truth.
