Speaking from Inside Out
Rev. Enoch Thompson | Friday, September 25, 2026 | Romans 9:1–5

KEY VERSE: “I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it in the Holy Spirit—I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.” — Romans 9:1–2 NIV
MESSAGE:
Many people relate to life only on the surface level, responding merely to what they see, hear, and physically experience. Yet God created human beings as spirit, soul, and body. When a person is born again through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, God makes the spirit alive and responsive to His voice and influence. Therefore, our thoughts, emotions, attitudes, and responses should increasingly flow from this renewed inner life and reflect the character of our Heavenly Father.
The concerns that the Apostle Paul expresses in Romans 9 did not arise from philosophy, politics, or national pride. They came from the depths of his heart. He writes, “I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.” Paul’s message was not only intellectually sound. It was spiritually and emotionally authentic. His convictions were rooted in a deep burden for those separated from God.
We must learn from this that it is not wrong to have deep feelings or to express them appropriately. God created us with emotions, and when we submit them to the Holy Spirit, they can become instruments of love, compassion, worship, concern, and godly conviction. Jesus Himself wept over Jerusalem and showed compassion for the lost. Likewise, Paul’s anguish reflected a heart deeply concerned about what mattered to God. As believers, we must learn to live from the inside out. The Holy Spirit desires to shape our inner lives so that our feelings, thoughts, and responses agree with God’s will. When we surrender our hearts to God, we will increasingly love what He loves and care about what concerns Him, especially the salvation of lost souls.
A healthy Christian life is not emotionally cold or spiritually detached. It is a life in which truth, conviction, compassion, and godly emotion flow together under the control of the Holy Spirit.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
Examine your inner life today. What feelings and attitudes dominate your heart? Ask the Holy Spirit to purify and direct your emotions rather than allowing circumstances to control them. Pray for a deeper burden for the salvation of family members, friends, and others who do not know Christ.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me new life in Christ and making my spirit alive to You. Help me to live from the inside out, with thoughts, emotions, and responses that reflect Your character. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, deepen my compassion for the lost, and align my heart with Yours. May my life be marked by truth, conviction, love, and obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.
SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!
The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING
Day 268: Ezekiel 21–24 — When God's Judgment can no longer be ignored.
DAILY word study: ANGUISH The word “anguish” in Romans 9:2 is translated from the Greek ὀδύνη (odynē), referring to deep pain, grief, or inner distress.
Paul strengthens the expression by pairing it with “unceasing” — ἀδιάλειπτος (adialeiptos), meaning continual or persistent. His concern for Israel was therefore not a passing emotional reaction. It was an enduring burden he carried.
The word odynē can describe pain that is deeply felt rather than merely observed. Paul knew Israel’s spiritual condition intellectually, yet that knowledge had reached his heart. Their separation from Christ affected him personally.
This gives us an important insight: spiritual maturity can deepen your capacity to care about the condition of others. A heart shaped by Christ does not grow indifferent to people far from God.
Reflect on this:
Who has become more than a name on your prayer list and has become a genuine burden on your heart before God?
