Thanksgiving

KEY VERSE: “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind…”_ — Romans 7:25 ESV

MESSAGE:

The closing verse of Romans chapter 7 is remarkable. After the anguished cry, “Who will deliver me from this body of death?” Paul suddenly breaks into thanksgiving: “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” The movement from anguish to triumph is striking. The answer to Paul’s helplessness is not found within himself but in Jesus Christ.

It is instructive to note that our deliverance from the bondage of sin comes only through the Lord Jesus Christ. The Father has provided salvation through the Son, and Romans chapter 8 will go on to show the crucial work of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s sanctification. In this we see the love and wisdom of the Triune God at work in our salvation.

The final words of verse 25 also remind us of the conflict Paul has described throughout the chapter. He delights in the Law of God with his mind, yet he remains conscious of the pull of sin in the flesh. The struggle is real, but it does not cancel the reason for thanksgiving. Christ remains the answer to the cry for deliverance.

Paul’s thanksgiving also recalls his earlier teaching in Romans 1, where humanity knew something of God’s power yet failed to honour Him or give Him thanks. A heart that has recognised God’s saving grace should therefore be marked by gratitude. When we remember what God has done for us through Jesus Christ, thanksgiving should become a continuing response.

Thank God today specifically for the salvation and deliverance He has provided through Jesus Christ. Let that gratitude shape your worship, your obedience, and the way you live.

Father God, thank You for the salvation and deliverance You have given me through Jesus Christ. Help me to live each day with a grateful heart and in obedience to You. Amen.

 DAILY word study: THANKS The Greek word translated “thanks” is χάρις, charis. It can mean grace, favour, gratitude, or thanksgiving.

Paul’s thanksgiving is rooted in grace. He does not thank God because the struggle was easy. He gives thanks because God has provided the answer through Jesus Christ. True thanksgiving grows when we recognise that our salvation, help, and deliverance are gifts of God’s grace.
