The Departure of Jesus - Pt. 6

Rev. Osei Kwabena Nkrahene | September 12 2024 | John 16:23-32

KEY VERSE:

” I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” John 16:28 (ESV)

MESSAGE:

In verse 32, Jesus tells the disciples that though they will abandon Him, God the Father will be with Him. It's comforting to know that God never abandons His own (Psalm 94:14). Paul also testifies in 2 Timothy 4:16-17 that when everyone deserted him, God stood by him and strengthened him. The verse under discussion is a profound one. The key verse under discussion gives us the following about the Lord Jesus:

  • His eternal existence with the Father;

  • The temporary stay on earth;

  • The Return to the First State.

In John 17:5, Jesus speaks of the glory He shared with the Father before the world existed. Apostles John and Peter (2 Peter 1:16-18) also recount glimpses of this glory. The incarnation was necessary for salvation, as described in Hebrews 2:14-18. C.S. Lewis illustrates this by comparing it to a human becoming a worm, reflecting the immense sacrifice Jesus made. Now, having completed His great mission, Jesus returns to the Father in joy. *FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:*

God sees a need and calls His children to fulfil it. Just as Jesus completed His mission and returned to the Father, we are invited to respond to God’s call with diligence and joy. Embrace your role with enthusiasm, knowing that fulfilling God’s purpose brings true joy, just as Jesus did when He accomplished His task. PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, you paid a supreme price to get your assigned work done. Please, give me the grace to get mine done, regardless of the cost. Amen.

THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.

SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!

DAILY word study: LEAVING The Greek verb "ἐξέρχομαι" (exérchomai) means "to go out," "to come out," or "to depart." It signifies leaving one place to go to another, implying a transition from one state or location to another. This term can denote physical departure, as well as a transition in status or condition. In John 16:28, when Jesus speaks of "leaving," He refers to His imminent return to the Father after fulfilling His earthly mission. This departure signifies His return to His divine, preexistent state with the Father, marking the end of His earthly ministry. It also reflects the successful completion of His mission of salvation, emphasizing the transition from His time on earth to His glorified state with God. Reflections: Jesus’ departure from the world was a pivotal moment in salvation history, marking the completion of His mission and the beginning of a new phase of divine relationship and purpose. How does understanding Jesus’ departure as a fulfilment of His mission impact your view of His ongoing role in your life and in the world?
