The Disgraced Name: How our Actions Reflect on God

Rev. Charles Oppong-Poku | Tuesday, June 23, 2026 | Romans 2:17–24

KEY VERSE: “You who boast in the law, do you dishonour God by breaking the law?” (Romans 2:23, NIV)

MESSAGE:

Our lives say something about the God we claim to serve. The Apostle Paul reaches a sobering point in his argument against religious hypocrisy. He reminds his listeners that when people claim to belong to God yet live in disobedience to His Word, they harm not only themselves but also others. They dishonour the name of God.

The very Law they proudly pointed to as proof of their spiritual privilege became a witness against them because they refused to live by it. Their confession sounded strong, but their conduct weakened their witness. To the watching world, the life of the believer carries weight because people often judge what we proclaim by how we live.

As Christians, we rightly place a high value on the Bible. We honour the truth of Scripture, defend its authority, and build our faith and ministries around its teachings. Paul’s warning remains urgent. If our character does not match our confession, we bring reproach upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

When people see anger, dishonesty, pride, greed, or compromise in those who claim to follow Christ, they may question the message we represent. Our problem is often not that we do not know the truth, but that we have not yielded deeply enough to obey it.

The gospel gives us hope. Jesus lived the obedient life we could not live. On the cross, He bore the dishonour our sin deserved. He forgives, cleanses, transforms, and empowers us by the Holy Spirit to live in a way that honours His name.

FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:

In what ways might your daily attitudes or actions give others a distorted picture of who God is? Ask the Lord to help you move from merely agreeing with His Word to actively yielding to it in your hardest relationships, private habits, and daily choices. Let your deepest desire be to honour His holy name through an obedient and humble life.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, I am humbled by the truth that my life reflects on Your holy name. Forgive me for the times I have boasted in Your truth while dishonouring You with my lifestyle. Holy Spirit, work deeply in me and align my actions with my beliefs. May my life bring praise, glory, and honour to Jesus Christ, rather than shame. Amen.

THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.

SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!

The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING

DAILY word study: DISHONOUR

The word "Dishonour" comes from the Greek word Atimazō, meaning to dishonour, disgrace, treat with disrespect, or bring shame upon someone’s name.

Insight: In Romans 2:23, Paul says that those who boast in God’s Law dishonour God when they break it. The issue is deeper than personal failure. A life that claims God’s truth but resists obedience can make others think lightly of the God we represent. Our conduct carries His name before people.

Reflect on this:

Ask God to help your life honour His name in your speech, choices, relationships, and private conduct.
