The Gospel Explained

Rev. (Rtd.) Osei Kwabena Nkrahene | June 7, 2026 | Romans 1:16–22

KEY VERSE: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes... For in it the righteousness of God is revealed...” (Romans 1:16–17, ESV)

MESSAGE:

Paul’s bold confession that he was not ashamed of the gospel rests on a clear reason. In Romans 1:16–17, we see why the gospel deserves such confidence. It is God’s power for salvation, it is received by faith, and it reveals the righteousness of God.

The gospel is “the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” This salvation begins with the new birth and continues through the whole life of the believer. God brings us to Christ, keeps us in Christ, and will finally bring us to our heavenly home. The power of God is very significant here. Ephesians 2:1–3 shows that the unsaved person lives under sin and spiritual bondage. We need God’s power to deliver us. 1 Corinthians 1:24 declares that Christ is “the power of God.” Romans 1:4 also shows that Jesus was declared the Son of God in power through His resurrection from the dead.

This salvation is for all who believe. Paul says it is for the Jew first and for the Greek as well. The offer came first to the Jews, and it also extends to the Gentiles. The gospel is God’s saving message for everyone who believes. To believe is to rely fully on the finished work of Christ. We trust Him for forgiveness of sin. We depend on Him for daily Christian living. We continue in this faith from the first day of salvation to the final hour of life.

Paul goes on in verse 17 to show that the gospel also reveals the righteousness of God. In Christ, God makes sinners right with Himself. As 1 Corinthians 1:30 teaches, Christ becomes our “righteousness, sanctification and redemption.” This is the heart of the good news. Since the fall in the Garden of Eden, humanity has lived in sin and ruin, and the only true answer is faith in the risen Christ.

FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:

Receive the gospel as God’s power for salvation through faith in Christ. Rest fully on the finished work of Christ for forgiveness, righteousness, and daily Christian living. Like Paul, carry this message faithfully to others.

PRAYER:

Lord, help Your Church to proclaim the unique message of salvation with faith, clarity, and urgency. May many believe in the risen Christ and receive the righteousness that comes through Him. Amen. THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.

SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!

The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING

DAILY word study: SALVATION

Sōtēria is the Greek word translated “salvation.” It means rescue, deliverance, preservation, and safety.

In Romans 1:16, Paul says the gospel is “the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.”

This salvation begins when God brings the sinner to faith in Christ. It continues as God keeps the believer in Christ, shapes the believer through Christ, and brings the believer to the final hope of eternal life.

The gospel saves because Christ has dealt with sin through His finished work and risen life.

Reflect on this:

Believe the gospel with full confidence.

God’s saving power is enough for your forgiveness, your daily walk, and your final hope in Christ.
