KEY VERSE: “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness… the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” — Romans 8:26

MESSAGE:

After speaking about patiently waiting in hope, Paul reminds us that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. Suffering, grief and uncertainty can leave us struggling to pray. Sometimes words fail us; at other times, we can explain our concerns yet remain unsure what to ask God for. Our understanding is limited, and we cannot always discern what is best. Into this experience comes the assurance that the Spirit Himself helps us. We can approach our Father honestly, depending on His presence as we bring our concerns before Him.

Paul explains that the Spirit intercedes for us with “groanings too deep for words.” This assurance gives us confidence when our prayers feel inadequate and our burdens are difficult to express. The Spirit is personally involved in helping God’s children as they pray. We can acknowledge our confusion, speak of our sorrow and ask for help with the understanding we have. When a situation leaves us uncertain whether to ask for change, endurance or direction, we can bring that uncertainty to God. The Spirit’s intercession encourages us to continue approaching Him through our weakness.

The Spirit intercedes according to God’s will. Paul assures us that God searches our hearts and knows the mind of the Spirit. His intercession is in perfect agreement with the Father’s purposes, giving us a dependable foundation for trust. We may remain unable to see the way forward, and some questions may continue unanswered. We can still entrust ourselves and those we love to God’s wisdom and care. As we pray, we can ask for His will to be done, confident that the Spirit understands our need and intercedes on our behalf.

FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:

When you are unsure what to pray for, bring the concern honestly before God. Tell Him what troubles you and acknowledge what you do not understand. Ask for His will to be done, trusting the Spirit’s intercession as you pray.

PRAYER:

Father, thank You for Your Spirit’s help in my weakness. When I do not know what to pray for, help me bring my concerns honestly before You. Teach me to trust Your will and depend on the Spirit’s intercession. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.

SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!

The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING

Day 259 Jeremiah 45–48 — God Judges Pride and Preserves His Servant

DAILY word study: HELPS “Helps” is translated from the Greek synantilambanomai (συναντιλαμβάνομαι), meaning to help, support or take hold together with someone. The same verb appears in Luke 10:40, where Martha asks Jesus to tell Mary to help her. Its use there illustrates assistance given to someone carrying a responsibility

In Romans 8:26, the Spirit gives this help within our weakness. Paul includes himself when he says “our weakness,” placing even an apostle among those who need divine assistance in prayer. Spiritual maturity includes recognising our dependence on God.

This gives us a helpful way to approach prayer: we come as people in need of help. We can begin with the understanding we have, trusting the Spirit’s intercession as we bring our concerns before the Father.

Reflect on this:

Have you been postponing prayer until you feel more composed or certain? Begin with what you can honestly say to God, as His Spirit helps.
