What the Law Could Not Do

Monday, August 31, 2026 | Romans 8:1–4
KEY VERSE: “For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh” — Romans 8:3
MESSAGE:
Having shown that the Spirit sets believers free from the law of sin and death, Paul now explains in verse 3 why God had to act through His Son. The law reveals God’s righteous standard and exposes the sin within us, but it could not save us because of human weakness. The law can show us where we have gone wrong, yet it cannot remove our guilt or release us from sin’s power. Humanity therefore needed God to act.
God did what the law could not do by sending His own Son. Jesus entered our human condition in the likeness of sinful flesh while remaining without sin. He offered Himself for sin, and God condemned sin in His flesh. Through Christ’s death, sin received its judgment, and a way opened for the guilty to receive forgiveness and new life.
Your salvation rests on what God has accomplished through His Son. Receive Christ with faith and live with gratitude for the price He paid. When guilt, weakness, or failure confronts you, return to the saving work of Jesus. His sacrifice has dealt with sin, and His Spirit now enables you to pursue a life that pleases God.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
Pause today to thank God for sending His Son to do what you could never do for yourself. Let gratitude for Christ’s sacrifice shape your attitude, your words, and one deliberate act of obedience.
PRAYER:
Father, thank You for doing through Jesus Christ what I could never do for myself by sending Your Son to bear the judgment my sin deserved. I confess that my own strength cannot remove my guilt or overcome sin’s power. Help me trust His finished work, depend on Your Spirit, and let gratitude shape my obedience each day. Amen.

DAILY word study: LIKENESS The Greek word homoiōma, translated as “likeness,” means resemblance, form, or something that corresponds to another. In Romans 8:3, Paul affirms that Jesus truly shared in our humanity, yet remained without sin.
Jesus entered a world marked by human weakness, suffering, and death. He possessed genuine human flesh, yet sin never ruled Him. As the sinless Son of God, He could offer Himself for sinners and deal fully with sin.
