Zeal Without Knowledge

Rev. Tetteh-Annor Larbi | Sunday, October 4, 2026 | Romans 10:2–3

KEY VERSE: “For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.” — Romans 10:2

MESSAGE:

The Apostle Paul gives his people credit: they were sincere and passionate about God. He does not accuse them of laziness or indifference. But sincerity is not the same as truth. They worked hard at religion while missing the very righteousness God was offering. It is a sobering reminder that a person can be devoted, disciplined, and earnest, and still be pointed in the wrong direction.

Paul explains that they were ignorant of God’s righteousness and were trying to establish their own. Their zeal was real, but it was not guided by the truth of what God had provided. This is a warning against zeal that has no Scriptural foundation. When we serve God by our own instincts, traditions, or feelings alone, we risk pursuing what seems right to us while missing what He has revealed.

Passion needs direction. Like fire that must be properly contained, zeal must be guided by truth. God desires a people whose devotion is shaped by His Word and whose confidence rests in the righteousness He provides.

FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:

Bring your spiritual habits, convictions, and ways of serving before God’s Word today. Ask whether they are rooted in what God has said or mainly in what you assume pleases Him. Let Scripture correct and direct your passion.

PRAYER:

Father, I want my devotion to be real and my knowledge to be true. Teach me through Your Word so that my zeal follows Your truth and my confidence rests in the righteousness You provide. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING. SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!

The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING

Day 277 Daniel 7–9 — Visions, Prayer, and God’s Sovereign Purpose

DAILY word study: ZEAL The Greek word translated “zeal” in Romans 10:2 is zēlos (ζῆλος). It describes intense eagerness, fervour, or passionate devotion.

Paul acknowledges that Israel had zēlos for God. Their devotion was genuine and energetic. Yet zeal itself does not determine whether a person has understood God rightly. Paul immediately explains that their zeal lacked knowledge of God’s righteousness.

The word conveys a sense of strong inner intensity. This helps us see why zeal can shape a person’s whole religious life. The crucial question is what truth directs that intensity.

Reflect on This

What is shaping and directing your passion for God today?.
