A Matter of the Heart

Rev. Charles Oppong-Poku | Thursday, June 25, 2026 | Romans 2:28–29

KEY VERSE: “. . . Circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit... Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.” (Romans 2:29, NIV)

MESSAGE:

One of the great temptations in the Christian life is to focus on outward appearances while neglecting the condition of the heart. We can become occupied with religious activities, traditions, and public displays of spirituality, yet fail to cultivate a genuine relationship with God. In Romans 2:28–29, Paul brings the matter to its deepest point. True spirituality is a work of God in the heart.

The Jews placed great significance on circumcision as the outward sign of their covenant relationship with God. Circumcision had value as a symbol of God’s covenant, but many had come to trust in the symbol rather than in the God it represented. Paul makes a profound statement: true identity before God is not determined by outward rituals, but by inward transformation. What matters most is not an external mark on the body, but a heart changed by the Spirit of God.

God is not impressed by outward conformity when our inward desires are far from Him. Jesus addressed this hypocrisy when He compared the Pharisees to whitewashed tombs, beautiful on the outside but unclean within (Matthew 23:27). Romans 2:28–29 calls us to examine the condition of the heart before God. Ritual without reality becomes empty religion. True grace saves us from the inside out and produces the circumcision of the heart by the Holy Spirit.

FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:

Are you more concerned about how others perceive your spirituality than about the true condition of your heart before God? Ask the Holy Spirit to search you honestly and transform you deeply. Let your faith be shaped by inward grace, sincere devotion, and a heart that seeks God’s praise above human approval.

PRAYER:

Dear Lord, thank You for the transforming work of Your Spirit in my life. Forgive me for the times I have focused more on outward appearances than on the condition of my heart. Continue to shape me into the likeness of Jesus Christ, and produce in me a faith that is genuine and pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.

SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!

The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING

DAILY word study: HEART The word translated “heart” comes from the Greek word kardia, which refers to the heart, the inner person, and the centre of thought, desire, will, and moral life.

In Romans 2:29, Paul says true covenant identity is a matter of the heart. God looks beyond outward signs and public religious appearance. He sees the inward life. A heart changed by the Spirit begins to desire what honours God, obey what God commands, and seek praise from Him rather than from people.

Reflect on this: Ask the Holy Spirit to shape your inner life so your faith becomes genuine before God.
