Gentile Christian, Be Measured - Part 2

Rev. (Rtd.) Osei Kwabena Nkrahene | Saturday, October 17, 2026 | Romans 11:16–24

KEY VERSE: “They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become proud, but fear.” — Romans 11:20 (ESV)

MESSAGE:

Pride often begins when we forget how much of what we enjoy came to us as a gift. Paul therefore continues his warning to Gentile believers. Their new place in God’s saving work was not a reason to look down on Israel. It was a reason to remember their dependence on God.

Paul uses the picture of an olive tree. Some natural branches had been broken off, and wild branches had been grafted in. His warning is clear: “It is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you” (Romans 11:18). The Gentile believers had been brought into a story and promise they did not begin. They were receiving nourishment from what God had already established. That left no room for boasting.

Paul then introduces what we might call the God factor. The Gentiles stood through faith and enjoyed God’s kindness. Their position did not rest on superiority, achievement, or merit. Verse 20 says plainly, “You stand fast through faith.” Verse 22 then calls them to consider both God's kindness and severity. Their response should therefore be humility, reverence, and continued dependence on His grace.

The same truth speaks to us. Spiritual privilege, position, knowledge, influence, or recognition can quietly produce pride when we forget the grace that brought us there. Whatever place God has given you, remember that you stand because He has been kind to you. Stay humble. Remain in faith. Refuse to gloat over others, and let gratitude shape the way you see and treat people.

FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:

Examine any area where blessing, position, knowledge, or recognition has made you feel superior to others. Remember that you stand by faith and by God’s kindness. Replace pride with gratitude, treat others with dignity, and remain dependent on His grace.

PRAYER:

Lord Jesus, keep me humble before You. Help me to remember that I stand by faith and enjoy every spiritual blessing because of Your kindness. Deliver me from pride, gloating, and every attitude of superiority. Let gratitude, reverence, and humility shape my life. Amen.

THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.

SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!

The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING

Day 290 Habakkuk 2–3; Zephaniah 1–2 — Live by Faith While God Confronts Pride and Injustice.

DAILY word study: STAND The Greek word translated “stand” is histēmi (ἵστημι), pronounced HIS-tay-mee. In Romans 11:20, Paul uses the form hestēkas, meaning “you stand” or “you remain standing.”

Paul’s point is clear. The Gentile believer’s place in God’s saving work is not secured by superiority or personal achievement. “You stand fast through faith.” Their standing depends on trusting God and receiving His kindness.

The word points to a position that is being maintained. Paul immediately removes every reason for pride by explaining how that position is maintained: through faith. The believer stands, but never independently of God.

Reflect on This:

Are you living with humble dependence on God, or have you begun to treat His grace as something you earned?
