Rev. Tse Amable | July 13 2025 | Acts 12:12-15

KEY VERSE: You're out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.” Acts 12:15 (NIV)

MESSAGE:

The response of the church to Rhoda’s exclamation, filled with joy and excitement, “Peter is at the door!” is a very interesting one. This was a church which was praying earnestly for their leader, who was in prison awaiting a possible execution by Herod. But when the Lord answered their prayers and intervened to release their leader, they found that one to be impossible, too difficult to believe. They believed the person knocking at the door was Peter’s angel. The Jews believed in the concept of guardian angels, and it appears that some among them may have thought that one’s guardian angel bore some resemblance to the human being it was assigned to.

Did the church not have faith in God to whom they prayed? THEIR PRAYER WAS EARNEST (see Acts 12:5), BUT THEIR FAITH WAS NOT OVERWHELMING. Probably they had little faith, but LITTLE FAITH CAN ACCOMPLISH GREAT THINGS IF IT IS PLACED IN THE GREAT GOD. Jesus Christ said, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there' and it will move. NOTHING WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU” (Matthew 17:20).

Remember the words of Jesus Christ: “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” (Mark 11:24). HAVE FAITH IN GOD TO DO IMPOSSIBLE THINGS WHEN YOU PRAY.

FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:

Do you really believe the Lord can do the things you ask him to do for you? One barrier to answered prayer is doubt. Apostle James wrote, “But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does” (James 1:6-8). Before you start praying, throw every doubt out to the Lord.

PRAYER:

Father, I thank you that you are able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to your power that is at work within us. Look beyond my unbelief and little faith and answer my prayers in accordance with your own will, plan and purpose. And give me faith to believe that all things are possible to those who believe. I ask for this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen!

THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.

SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!

DAILY word study: ANGEL The Greek word translated “angel” in Acts 12:15 is angelos (ἄγγελος), which means “a messenger sent by God.”

When Rhoda said Peter was at the door, the believers couldn’t believe it. They said, “It must be his angel,” reflecting an old Jewish belief that people had guardian angels who resembled them or acted on their behalf.

Their reaction shows how we sometimes choose explanations that seem spiritual but are really driven by doubt. Instead of recognising the answer to their prayer, they dismissed it as something else.

Reflect on this:

Do you expect God to answer clearly, or do you explain away the very thing you’ve been praying for?
