Hearers or Doers?

KEY VERSE: “For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.” (Romans 2:13, NIV)
MESSAGE:
Having established in verse 12 that all people are accountable to God according to the light they have received, Paul now explains that merely hearing God’s truth is not enough. God desires hearts that respond to His Word with obedience.
Hearing God’s Word is a privilege. The Jews had received God’s Law and regularly heard it read and taught. Today, many believers have access to Scripture, sermons, Bible studies, and Christian resources. These are wonderful gifts from God. Yet knowledge alone does not make a person righteous before Him.
Obedience is the evidence of a responsive heart. Paul says that those who obey the law will be declared righteous. He is not teaching that good works earn salvation. He is emphasising that genuine faith produces obedience. A heart transformed by God’s grace will increasingly desire to follow His ways. The issue is the direction of life, whether it is being shaped by obedience to God.
God has also given a moral witness to all people. Paul notes that even Gentiles, who did not possess the written Law, sometimes instinctively did what the Law required. Their actions revealed that God had placed a sense of right and wrong within the human heart. This shows that God has not left Himself without a witness and that every person is accountable to Him.
This passage challenges us to move beyond simply hearing God’s Word. The blessing comes when truth is received, believed, and put into practice. As James later writes, we are to be “doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22).
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
Is there a truth from Scripture that you know but have not yet obeyed? God is not looking for people who merely hear His Word. He is looking for people whose lives are being transformed by it. Ask Him for grace to obey what He has already made clear.
PRAYER:
Dear Lord, thank You for the privilege of hearing Your Word. Give me a heart that responds to Your truth with faith and action. Help me to be a doer of Your Word, not merely a hearer, so that my life may honour You and reflect the transforming power of Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING
Day 170: Job 25–28 - Where Wisdom Is Found
DAILY word study: Doer The word Doers comes from the Greek word Poiētēs, meaning a doer, performer, maker, or one who carries something out in action.
In Romans 2:13, Paul uses “doers” to describe people who respond to God’s revealed will with active obedience. The word points beyond listening, agreeing, or remembering. It speaks of a life that carries God’s truth into practice. In biblical faith, hearing is meant to shape conduct, choices, speech, and relationships
Reflect on this:
Do not let God’s Word stop at your ears. Let it move your heart, guide your actions, and shape your obedience today.
