Jesus - Greater Than Moses
Rev. Charles Oppong-Poku | April 2, 2024 | John 5:45-47
KEY VERSE:
If you really believed Moses, you would believe me, because he wrote about me. John 5:46 (NLT)
MESSAGE:
In John 5:45-47, Jesus contrasts His authority and identity with that of Moses, highlighting His superiority as the fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets. This passage reveals Jesus' unique role in God's plan of salvation. Moses was highly esteemed in Jewish tradition as the giver of the Law and a great prophet. The Jewish leaders looked to Moses as a source of authority and guidance. Jesus declares that if the Jewish leaders truly believed Moses, they would believe in Him because Moses wrote about Him. Jesus' authority surpasses that of Moses because He is the fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets.
Jesus emphasizes that The Law and the Prophets point forward to Him as the promised Messiah and Savior. He is the ultimate revelation of God's will and plan for salvation. Jesus fulfils the promise of God to send a great prophet like Moses. However, Jesus is greater than Moses. The covenant that Jesus brought is greater than the covenant given through Moses. At the same time, Jesus fulfils the law of Moses. Jesus reveals the essence of God's heart that underlies the Mosaic law. So, we look to the law as the way to bring us to a deeper appreciation of God's grace given to us in Jesus. While we honour and respect Moses, our faith and hope are firmly placed in Jesus, the Son of God.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
In what ways do you recognize Jesus as greater than Moses in your life? Are there areas in your life where you struggle to submit to Jesus' authority? How does knowing Jesus as the fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets impact your daily walk with Him and your relationship with God? As we reflect on Jesus' words, may we be reminded of His authority and identity as the Son of God and the Savior of the world. Let us place our faith in Him and follow Him as the ultimate source of truth and salvation.
PRAYER:
Dear Lord, thank you for revealing yourself to me through your Word and through Jesus Christ. Help me to recognize Jesus for who He is and to place my faith in Him as the fulfilment of your promises. May I follow Him faithfully and obediently in all areas of my life. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.
SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!
DAILY word study: WROTE In John 5:46 (NLT), the word "wrote" is translated from the Greek verb "ἔγραψεν" (egrapsen), which means "to write" or "to inscribe."
In this text, Jesus is referring to the writings of Moses, particularly the Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament), where prophecies and promises concerning the coming Messiah were recorded. Jesus asserts that if the Jews truly believed the words of Moses and understood their significance, they would recognize Him as the fulfilment of those prophecies.
This statement reveals the continuity and coherence of Scripture, highlighting the interconnectedness of the Old and New Testaments. Jesus affirms the authority and inspiration of the writings of Moses, indicating that they bear witness to Him and His mission.
Reflections:
As you meditate on this verse, consider how the writings of Moses and the rest of Scripture testify to the person and work of Jesus Christ. How does this awareness shape your reading and interpretation of the Bible, and how does it impact your relationship with Jesus?
