Overcome Evil with Good
Rev. Charles Oppong-Poku | October 31, 2026 | Romans 12:17–21

KEY VERSE: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21
MESSAGE:
When someone wrongs us, our response reveals what is shaping our hearts. Romans 12:17–21 calls believers to respond to wrongdoing with goodness, pursue peace where possible, and leave vengeance to God. Christ gives us grace to maintain integrity and keep doing what is right even when others act unjustly.
Paul commands believers to do what is right in the sight of all (v. 17). Retaliation can let others' wrongdoing influence our conduct. We are called to maintain integrity, respond wisely, and let our conduct reflect Christ as we handle mistreatment and injustice.
Paul instructs believers to live at peace with everyone, as far as it depends on them (vv. 18–19). Relationships involve others' choices, so peace may not always be possible. We must do our part to avoid unnecessary conflict and take responsible steps toward peace. We also entrust vengeance to God and allow His righteous judgment to govern the matter. Seeking peace can include setting wise boundaries and using lawful protection and justice appropriately.
Paul calls believers to respond to an enemy’s needs with practical kindness (vv. 20–21). Feeding the hungry or giving drink to the thirsty shows a heart governed by Christ's goodness. Such actions may awaken the offender's conscience while leaving judgment in God’s hands. Christlike goodness expresses spiritual strength and keeps hatred from gaining control of our hearts.
Romans 12 begins with the call to offer our lives to God and be transformed by the renewing of our minds. The chapter closes by showing what that transformation looks like when we are wronged. Through Christ, we can keep choosing what is right, loving, and honourable, and overcome evil with good.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
Refuse the urge to retaliate when someone wrongs you. Take one step toward peace where it is wise and possible. Entrust your desire for revenge and justice to God. Respond with practical kindness when an appropriate opportunity arises. Choose conduct that reflects Christ even when you have been treated unfairly.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, help me respond to wrongdoing with wisdom, integrity, and grace. Deliver me from bitterness, hatred, and the desire for revenge. Give me courage to do what is right, pursue peace where possible, and entrust judgment to You. Give me grace to show kindness even when I am mistreated. May Your goodness be seen in my words, actions, and relationships. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.
SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!
The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING
Day 304 Reading: Mark 1–4 — Jesus Begins His Ministry with Authority, Calling, Teaching, Healing, and Power.
DAILY word study: REPAY The Greek word translated “repay” in Romans 12:17 is ἀποδίδωμι, apodidōmi. It means to give back, return, render, or repay what is due.
Paul writes, “Repay no one evil for evil.”
The word pictures giving something back in response to what has been received. When another person acts wrongly toward you, Christ gives you grace to choose what your own response will become. Your words, actions, and attitude can remain under His rule.
Apodidōmi reminds us that another person’s behaviour does not have to dictate ours.
A transformed mind produces a transformed response. Even when you are hurt, offended, or treated unfairly, Christ can shape what you give back through your words and actions.
Reflect on this:
Where have you been tempted to repay a wrong, and how can Christ shape your response today?
