KEY VERSE: “Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God.” (Romans 1:1, ESV)
MESSAGE:
A life touched by grace is also claimed for God’s purpose, and in Romans 1:1, Paul gives us another important credential of his identity as he opens his letter to the Romans. He was set apart for the gospel of God. His life had been marked out by God for a sacred assignment.
God has always set people apart for Himself and His agenda. Adam and Eve received a creation mandate. Israel was called to be God’s treasured possession, a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. The Levites were set apart for service. The Church is also called a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a people for God’s own possession.
Paul understood his life in this same light. The Lord called him His chosen instrument when he encountered the risen Christ. Later, Paul testified that the Lord had commissioned him to open the eyes of the Gentiles and bring them from darkness to light. He also made it clear that God had set him apart before he was born, just as the Lord said of Jeremiah.
The leaders of the Church affirmed this calling, but Paul never treated it as a personal achievement. He kept pointing to Grace. In Romans 1:5, he speaks of receiving grace and apostleship. In Romans 15:15–16, he describes his ministry to the Gentiles as grace given by God. Paul knew he did not deserve this grace. In 1 Corinthians 15:9–10, he calls himself the least of the apostles. Yet he also says that the grace of God toward him was not in vain. That grace produced faithful labour in his life. This teaches us that grace must not be in vain; it should bear fruit through faithful labour.
May God’s grace in us bear fruit for the purpose for which we have been set apart.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
God sets His people apart for His purpose. Ask Him to help you recognise what He has placed before you, and let His grace bear fruit in faithful service, knowing that He is sovereign in His choices and that His purpose cannot be derailed.
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus Christ, may Your grace toward us never be in vain. Help us to recognise what You have set us apart to do and give us strength to labour faithfully because of Your grace. Amen.
THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.
SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!
The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING
DAILY word study: SET APART
Aphorizō is the Greek word translated “set apart.” It means to separate, mark off, appoint, or assign someone for a specific purpose.
In Romans 1:1, Paul says he was “set apart for the gospel of God.” His life was no longer moving by personal direction alone. God had marked him out for the sacred work of proclaiming the gospel.
This same truth runs through Paul’s testimony. He says God set him apart before he was born and called him by grace. That grace shaped his identity, his ministry, and his labour.
To be set apart means your life belongs to God’s purpose. Your gifts, opportunities, and responsibilities must serve what He has placed before you.
Reflect on this:
God’s grace should bear fruit in faithful service. What has God placed before you in this season? Ask Him to help you recognise it, embrace it, and serve faithfully because of His grace.
