KEY VERSE: “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.” (Romans 1:18, ESV)
MESSAGE:
The idea of God’s wrath or anger can be misunderstood because human anger is often selfish, unpredictable, and morally flawed. The wrath of God is His holy and righteous response to sin. In Romans 1:18–23, Paul speaks about humanity’s deliberate wrong response to God’s existence.
God has made His existence plain. Creation clearly reveals His power and deity. The visible creation points to the invisible God. His eternal power and divine nature can be seen through what He has made. The expected response from humanity was worship, thanksgiving, and glory to God.
Yet humanity did not respond rightly to what God had made known. Acts 17:30 tells us that God overlooked the times of ignorance, but now commands all people everywhere to repent. In Romans 1, Paul addresses the deliberate suppression of truth. The people knew the truth of God’s existence, yet they suppressed it through unrighteous living. Verse 21 makes it clear that the knowledge of God should have led them to honour, thank, and glorify Him.
Their refusal led them down a destructive path. They ceased to see themselves rightly before God. Their thinking became foolish. Their hearts became darkened. They exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling created things. This is the tragedy of suppressing the truth. When people refuse to honour God, their worship becomes distorted, their thinking becomes confused, and their lives move away from His glory.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
Acknowledge the truth God has made plain. Honour Him with worship, gratitude, and obedience. Examine your life and turn away from any attitude, habit, or decision that suppresses God’s truth. Let your knowledge of God lead you to glorify Him daily.
PRAYER:
Lord God, help us to honour the truth You have made plain. Keep our hearts from suppressing Your Word through wrong living. Teach us to worship You, thank You, and glorify You in all we do. Amen. THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.
SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!
The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING
DAILY word study: SUPPRESS
Katechō is the Greek word translated “suppress” in Romans 1:18. It means to hold down, restrain, hinder, or keep something from having its proper effect.
Paul uses this word to show a deliberate response to truth. God has made His power and divine nature plain through creation, yet people hold down that truth through unrighteous living.
Suppressing the truth occurs when a person knows what honours God yet chooses a path that resists Him. In Romans 1, this resistance affects worship, thinking, and desire. The heart moves away from gratitude, and created things begin to receive the honour due to the Creator.
Reflect on this:
Ask God to help you respond rightly to the truth He has made clear.
Let your knowledge of God lead you to worship, thanksgiving, obedience, and a life that gives Him glory.
