KEY VERSE: “To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honour, and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.” (Romans 2:7–8, NIV)
MESSAGE:
Every sunrise presents us with a serious reality: we are all walking on a path, and every step moves us toward an eternal destination. In Romans 2:7–8, the Apostle Paul strips away the superficial labels people often use to define themselves. He does not group people by social status, wealth, or intellect. He looks at the direction of their desires and actions. A person is either seeking God with a transformed heart or seeking self while rejecting God’s truth.
Paul begins with a description of the true believer’s life: “persistence in doing good.” This persistence is not an attempt to buy salvation. It is the natural direction of a heart transformed by the Holy Spirit. Good works cannot purchase Heaven, but a changed heart increasingly desires God’s approval more than worldly praise. Such a life keeps turning to Christ, walking in obedience, and seeking the glory, honour, and immortality that come from God.
In contrast, Paul also exposes the alternative path, which is marked by being “self-seeking.” A self-seeking life rejects God’s truth and follows evil. This path is evident when people insist on being masters of their own lives, silence their consciences, and ignore Scripture in favour of personal preferences. Paul warns that such a path leads to the righteous judgment of God.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
What is one practical area of your life where self-seeking tendencies often try to take control over obedience to God’s truth? Small daily choices shape our lives. The books we read, the habits we indulge in, the way we treat our family, and the secret thoughts we entertain all point us somewhere. Ask God to redirect your heart and help you walk in faithful obedience to His truth.
PRAYER:
Lord God, thank You for the clear warning and the beautiful promise in Your Word. Examine my heart today and reveal any self-seeking motives that are shaping my decisions. Forgive me for the times I have demanded my own way instead of submitting to Your truth. Help me to walk in obedience and seek what honours You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.
SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!
The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING
DAILY word study: SELF-SEEKING The word " self-seeking " comes from the Greek word Eritheia, which means selfish ambition, rivalry, contentiousness, or a spirit driven by personal interest.
In Romans 2:8, “self-seeking” describes more than personal desire. It points to a heart that places its own will above God’s truth. Such a person resists submission, chooses self-rule, and becomes unwilling to be corrected by the Word of God. Paul shows that rejecting truth often begins with the heart insisting on its own way.
Reflect on this: Ask God to expose every self-seeking motive and teach your heart to submit gladly to His truth.
