Humility: A Sober Self-Assessment
Rev. Charles Oppong-Poku | Thursday, October 22, 2026 | Romans 12:1–3

KEY VERSE: “For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.” — Romans 12:3 (NKJV)
MESSAGE:
Having called believers to present themselves as living sacrifices and to be transformed by the renewing of their minds, Paul now teaches that a transformed life should be marked by humility. Our relationship with God should shape how we see ourselves, leading us to assess ourselves honestly and wisely. Humility means recognising who we are and the abilities God has given us in the light of His grace.
Humility begins with recognising the grace of God. God entrusts us with gifts, abilities, achievements, and positions.. We should use them to serve Him and others with gratitude. Recognising our dependence on God nurtures thankfulness and faithful service.
Humility also requires an honest self-assessment. We should clearly recognise our strengths and limitations. Our abilities, achievements, and positions should lead us to responsible service, knowing that our worth and every good gift come from God. Humility helps us see ourselves truthfully in the light of His grace.
Humility helps us recognise our gifts, responsibilities, and place in the body of Christ. It enables us to serve faithfully, appreciate others' contributions, work together, and use what God has entrusted to us for His glory.
FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:
Evaluate yourself honestly. Recognise your strengths and limitations. Welcome correction and learn from others. Appreciate the gifts and contributions of fellow believers. Use your position and abilities to serve others and bring glory to God.
PRAYER:
Gracious Father, thank You for the gifts, abilities, and opportunities You have entrusted to me. Give me a humble heart and a sober understanding of who I am in Your sight. Help me recognise my strengths with gratitude, acknowledge my weaknesses with courage, and appreciate others' gifts. May I use everything You have given me to serve others and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.
SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!

DAILY word study: SOBERLY
The Greek word is sōphroneō (σωφρονέω), pronounced so-fro-NEH-oh. It means to think with sound judgment, be sensible, or have a balanced, disciplined view of oneself.
In Romans 12:3, Paul calls believers to see themselves accurately in the light of God’s grace. Sober thinking recognises your abilities, limitations, responsibilities, and place in the body of Christ.
Sōphroneō shows that humility involves clear thinking. God’s grace helps you assess yourself truthfully and use what He has entrusted to you with wisdom and gratitude.
Reflect on This:
Are you seeing yourself as God’s grace teaches you to see yourself?
