When God Gives Us Up, Part 1

Rev. (Rtd). Osei Kwabena Nkrahene | June 9, 2026 | Romans 1:24–32

KEY VERSE: “Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity. . . because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie. . .” (Romans 1:24-25 ESV)

MESSAGE:

When people reject God’s truth, their hearts become open to desires that lead them away from Him. Romans 1 reminds us that when humanity exchanges the truth about God for a lie, God gives people over to the desires they have chosen. What may first seem like freedom soon becomes a form of bondage that darkens both heart and life.

Paul stresses this solemn truth by repeating in verses 24, 26, and 28 that God gave them up. In verse 24, this giving up begins in the heart, as God gave them up “in the lusts of their hearts to impurity.” The outward result was the dishonouring of their bodies among themselves. Since the later verses speak of deeper perversions, verse 24 may be understood here as pointing to sexual sin outside God’s gracious design for marriage.

Verse 25 explains why this judgment came: they exchanged the truth about God for a lie. Instead of worshipping the Creator, who is blessed forever, they worshipped and served created things. Whenever the Creator is pushed aside, the heart loses its true centre, and the whole of life begins to fall out of order.

In view of this, Scripture repeatedly calls us to guard the heart. Proverbs 4:20–23 tells us to keep the heart with all vigilance. Mark 7:20–23 teaches that evil things come from within the heart and defile a person. Joel 2:12–13 calls us to return to God with all our hearts in true repentance. The safest response is to acknowledge the Creator by our words, our worship, and our way of life. FEET AND HANDS FOR THE MESSAGE:

Guard your heart before God. Reject every lie that replaces the truth about the Creator. Honour God with your body, your desires, and your daily choices. Return to Him with a repentant heart and live under His truth.

PRAYER:

Lord God, help us to acknowledge You as Creator and live according to Your truth. Guard our hearts from desires that dishonour You. Lead us to repentance, purity, and faithful worship. May our words and deeds give glory to You. Amen. THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING.

SHOWERS! BLESSINGS!!

The 365 DAILY BIBLE READING

DAILY word study: GAVE THEM UP Paradidōmi is the Greek word behind “gave them up.” It means to hand over, deliver over, or give someone over to something.

In Romans 1:24, Paul says God gave them up “in the lusts of their hearts to impurity.” This shows a serious act of divine judgment. God allowed them to move deeper into the desires they had chosen after exchanging His truth for a lie.

The first sphere affected is the heart. When the heart refuses God’s truth, desires lose their proper direction, and the body becomes dishonoured.

Reflect on this:

Guard your heart before God. Receive His truth, reject the lie, and let your desires remain under His rule.
